Often the misotheists (god-haters) like Richard Dawkins and Neil deGrasse Tyson (host of Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey TV series) will claim that those who believe in God, and, even more particularly, in the Creator God of the biblical Genesis account of Creation, cannot do science. They claim that thinking in those terms destroys one’s ability to do real science. They claim that creationism is anti-science and call it pseudoscience.
But can a scientist who holds a literal historical worldview of the Genesis 1 account do real science? Of course he can. I am one such scientist. I largely work in the time and frequency community building the most advanced classical clocks ever developed by man. These are used in time standards labs to assist atomic fountain clocks to operate at their ultimate quantum-limited performance. I have proposed their use for improved imaging of the super-massive black holes at the centre of our galaxy and nearby galaxies, and I am working with members of the team involved with the Event Horizon Telescope, comprising a collection of large high frequency radio-telescopes, located across the surface of the Earth.
This must be real science—not pseudoscience. For this work I was awarded the 2010 W.G. Cady award by IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control Society. The W.G. Cady Award recognizes outstanding contributions in the fields of piezoelectric or other classical frequency control, selection and measurement and resonant sensor devices. The citation reads:
“for the construction of ultra-stable cryogenic sapphire dielectric resonator oscillators and promotion of their applications in the fields of frequency metrology and radio-astronomy.”
Believing is a Creator, is the opposite of what they falsely claim. God is the lawgiver and He created stationary laws that we can trust in. A belief in such has been the basis for the modern development of science. Read The Lawgiver is the biblical Creator God.
Dawkins also claims that no serious scientist doubts evolution. As if to say unless you believe in evolution you cannot do serious science. But that also must be false. I do serious science but I don’t believe in evolution. Evolution, properly understood, is not operational science, but more forensic or historical science and has no bearing on modern technology.
One further example of this serious science is my paper titled “Colloquium: Comparison of Astrophysical and Terrestrial Frequency Standards,” published in the journal Reviews of Modern Physics, 83, 1-9, 2011. I authored the paper with my colleague Prof. Andre Luiten. The journal has an Impact Factor of 43, higher than that of the famous journals Science and Nature. That is serious science. So much so that quite a controversy developed when we first published that paper online. Which are the best clocks in the Universe?
As a Bible-believing scientist I do not bring the biblical narrative into my lab. However, I do trust that the Universe God created is one that has logical laws and therefore I can use the tools I have been taught to test and search out those laws. God has promised in His Word that He keeps His promises—He never lies (Numbers 23:19). So apart from the special cases of where He intervenes, through a miracle, whereby He either suspends the natural law or He changes the rate at which it progresses, we can trust that those laws will be the same today as yesterday.
Modern scientists are fallible and subject to making errors and misinterpreting data. Some have even committed gross fraud in an attempt to gain wealth, fame and power. Ultimately we know that that does not satisfy, but it is far better to be honest and report faithfully the evidence that a correct interpretation maybe found.
The same problem has been in interpreting past historical evidence, like the fossil record, or the age of the earth etc. Fallible man not wanting to submit himself to the Creator God has done everything he can to redefine science such that it does not include a Creator. Hence the label on creationists as pseudoscientific, because they hold to a Creator.
The rational universe demands a Creator. The physicist, of whom I am one, believes in logical laws. Some like Paul Davies have gone so far as to say those laws are the Creator,1
“Yet the laws [of physics] that permit a Universe to create itself are even more impressive than a cosmic magician. If there is a meaning or purpose beneath physical existence, then it is to those laws rather than to the big bang that we should direct our attention.”
Like Prof. Davies many cannot quite come to the realization that the Bible has the simple truth. It was the Genesis Creator who created the laws of physics and everything else in the Universe. (Genesis 1:1) They, instead, worship the creation more than the Creator.
“Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.” Romans 1:15
